2003 Swim Classes, Diving and Swim Team Information

Each member may register for one term only.  There will be no late or phone registration.  If it is impossible for you to be here, another member may register for you.  If you have a swim card from last year, please bring it to registration.  Please check your vacation and camp calendar before registering.  Class sizes are limited and space may not be available.  Classes may be cancelled due to weather and will be canceled if weather temperature is 68 degrees or below.  Please phone time and temperature in Springfield at 390-2121 for temperature one hour before the scheduled lesson.
There will be four terms:
TERM A June 9 thru July 3 - twice a week for four weeks
REGISTRATION: Saturday June 7, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
TERM B July 7 thru July 31 - twice a week for four weeks
REGISTRATION: Saturday June 7, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
TERM C June 11 thru July 30 - once a week for eight weeks
REGISTRATION: Saturday June 7, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
TERM D August 4 thru August 28 - twice a week for four weeks - classes start at 5:00 PM
REGISTRATION: Saturday August 2, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

TERMS A, B, and D - Classes Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday

TERM C - Classes on Wednesday

All make up classes will be held on Friday only and posted at the Bath House.
We have listed the minimum skill requirements for each class.  Place your child in the appropriate class.  If you have any questions, ask an instructor at sign-ups.

Class Placement

Age three and under begin with Pre-Tiny Tots and advance in order as listed by the Red Cross Learn to Swim Program.
Age five and older begin with Level 1 and advance in order as listed by the Red Cross Learn to Swim Program.

Red Cross Learn to Swim Program

PRE-TINY TOTS Between ages six months and three - introduction to water - must have an adult participate
TINY TOTS Between ages three and five - no swimming ability - must be able to stand in shallow end of North Pool (2 1/2 ft.)
ADVANCED TINY TOTS Between ages three and five - must be able to prone float (float on stomach) and/or swim
DEEP WATER TINY TOTS Between ages three and five - must be able to float/swim on front and back - comfortable in 4 ft. water 
LEVEL I
WATER EXPLORATION
Age five and older - no swimming ability
LEVEL II
PRIMARY SKILLS
Successfully completed Level I - able to float on front and back - comfortable in 4 ft. of water 
LEVEL III
STROKE READINESS
Successfully completed Level II - able to swim on front and back and familiar with deep water 
LEVEL IV
STROKE DEVELOPMENT
Successfully completed Level III - dive from side of pool in kneeling position - swim front crawl 25 yards - swim back crawl - have knowledge of elementary backstroke, kick and survival float 
LEVEL V
STROKE REFINEMENT
Successfully completed Level IV - dive from side - swim elementary backstroke 10 yards - front crawl 25 yards - back crawl 25 yards - breaststroke 10 yards
LEVEL VI
SKILL PROFICIENCY
Successfully completed Level V - swim front crawl with rotary breathing 50 yards - breaststroke 10 yards - sidestroke 10 yards - elementary backstroke 25 yards - butterfly kick 10 yards - dive from diving board - open turns front and back
LEVEL VII
ADVANCED SKILLS
Successfully completed Level VI - swim front crawl 100 yards - back crawl 100 yards - breaststroke 25 yards - sidestroke 25 yards - butterfly kick 10 yards - approach stroke 25 yards - breaststroke and sidestroke turns - front crawl and flip turn
COMMUNITY WATER SAFETY (formerly Basic Water Safety & Emergency Water Safety) Provides helpful information about safer and healthier conditions in, on and around water - no prerequisites - water activities optional - no age level - 4 hour class (1 hour may be added) - registration Saturday, June 7, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
LIFEGUARD TRAINING Must be 15 years of age at beginning of course - attendance mandatory - information posted at Bath House if class is offered - registration Saturday, June 7, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

ADULT SWIM CLASSES

This class is swimming instruction for both beginning and advanced adult swimmers.  Registration will be Saturday, June 7, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

ADULT WATER EXERCISE CLASSES

This Water Exercise classes may be offered this year; however, we cannot guarantee this class.  For more information, please see signs posted at the Bath House.  If this class is offered, registration will be Saturday, June 7, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

COMPETITIVE SWIM CLASSES

This class helps swimmers work on their competitive strokes and is designed for first year Swim Team members or children who are interested in future swim team participation.  Registration will be Saturday, June 7, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

DIVING CLASSES

Registration will be Saturday, June 7, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM.  Class times and requirements will be posted at the Bath House

DIVING I No diving ability required
DIVING II Successfully completed front dive, back dive, front approach and water entry
DIVING III Successfully completed twist dive, back dive, finish and form
DIVING IV Competitive diving

SWIM TEAM

Members interested in being a part of our swim team should report to the first practice Monday, June 9, 10:00 AM.  There is no charge for joining.  Orders will be taken for swim team suits Friday, June 6 at the Welcome Back Swim Team Potluck.  We are very proud of our Lakewood Swim Team and hope that you will join us.
